Desktop publishing is something everyone in a company from secretaries on up are expected to know. Where I work, even the CEO does his own stuff to generate thelook and feel of company documents and the receptionist fleshes it out. There are not a lot of jobs for this sort of thing any more.
Myself as the product designer, in writing up the owner’s manual, I produce printer ready copy that goes right out to the end customer.
The problem with making the tools for this universal is that everyone is expected to know how to do this and the need for specialists in it goes away.
While there may be a few jobs left for a desktop publishing specialists I would not consider this more than a low level clerical type job anymore.
