I want to become a software or web developer. What should I learn without going back to school?
Question by E: I want to become a software or web developer. What should I learn without going back to school?
I have a business finance degree but haven’t really used it. I want to learn as much as possible without going back to school. So my question is what skills should I learn and should I do a microsoft certification? Any resources or books I should have would be good also. Which route should I go to get an entry level job? I’ve heard developers are in constant demand. I’ve done software testing but that is it. I noticed Microsoft has some great free training on their site. Thanks

HTML, CSS are a must for the web. Then add in Javascript, and PHP. You’ll be able to get work with just that if you master those languages. Also getting familiar with the popular CMSes, like Drupal or Joomla will be of great value.
Skip certification until an employer demands it.

Doing the Microsoft certification will certainly expand your knowledge base – but bear in mind that employers don’t pay much credence to certs.
In your position, I’d teach myself C or Python if you’d like to start off with something a bit easier. Python is a great stepping stone to various other languages and the more languages you know, the more employable you are.
