What should I do to improve my PC tune-up and its performance?
Question by Erik G: What should I do to improve my PC tune-up and its performance?
Just recently, I was on the Internet and noticed that my Norton 360 security software issued me a warning that hard disks are required to improve my PC’s performance. This means I will have to do everything to improve computer security and stop the viruses from invading my PC. I tried to fix it but the loading took longer than I expected (not 5-10 minutes but more than an hour), so I had to abort the scan and think about what I had done during my frequent use.
What have I done to deserve this? Supposedly I was browsing (I dislike using this word when it comes to computers) around websites and caused the PC to slow down. I don’t want to do this again. Right now I’m going to go back into scanning disks, but since my PC has problems of inserting hard disks into its drive and thus can’t operate at all, I don’t know what to do.
What should I do to improve my PC tune-up and its performance? If hard disks can’t work on my PC at all, then what should I use for scanning instead?
The hard disks need to be defragmented to improve PC performance. What should I do?

Uh….You aren’t making any sense. Can you not articulate your problem any clearer? A hard disk is what your operating system and data files reside on. I’m not sure what your scans are telling you but if it has to do with browsing, it shouldn’t do anything to the speed of your computer. You don’t “Insert hard disks” and I’m not sure what you are trying to refer to.
In general, You can run CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com), run a defrag on your C drive, remove utilities and programs that you rarely use, run a decent spyware cleaner like Spybot 1.52 (found at http://www.download.com).
I don’t think you are translating the warning correctly and can’t really focus on an exact answer until you clarify exactly what the message was.
What do you think? Answer below!

Norton isn’t telling you to do anything with those shiny silver CDs (what I think you’re referring to as “hard disks” Your real hard disk is inside the computer and doesn’t come out without someone taking the computer apart.)
Also, unless Norton specifically mentions viruses, spyware or malware in a message, it’s not giving you a warning about bad stuff on the disk. It may be telling you that it thinks it’s time to let it move things around on the hard disk to make it work more efficiently. That’s called defragmenting the disk.
Yes, this does take a long time. I usually start it running before I go to bed and leave the computer on overnight. The next morning, it’s finished. Note that just starting the program doesn’t start it optimizing the disk. You have to click a few more things to do that.
Hope that helps.
Edit: Norton usually has a defragger built-in, but because their interface changes from year to year, I can’t give you exact directions to using it. All I can advise is that you poke around in the Norton Interface looking for it.
Windows also has a defragger, which you could get to this way (in Windows XP):
1. Click the Start->Control Panel menu item.
2. Click the Performance and Maintenance item.
3. Click the Rearrange items on your hard disk menu item
4. Click Defragment. Note that if you run Analyze, the program may not agree with Norton as to the need to defrag your disk. Windows and Norton use different methods and criteria to make this determination.
Hope that helps.
Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.
