My task manager tells me I have 48 programs running in the background. Is that normal and if not which ones can be shut down till needed and which are needed to run the PC? I am a novice and do not feel comfortable doing it on my own.

Go under: start menu > run ( right hand side ) > then run disk cleanup and disk sefragmentation. Will optomize performance. Also I would reccomend spybot search and destrtoy. Also ad-aware 2007.
Hope I helped !

hey if you have alot of programs in the taskbar, that is where time and all the little icons are, you can customize those, usually when computers start up, these icons startup with the computer and they can slow it down alot…just go to run then type msconfig then go to the last tab startup and uncheck all the things u dont need i.e realplayer or itunes, or whatever. leave programs that have names like system or sys or ctf
